Invoice Factoring Explained: A Cash Flow Lifeline for Growing Businesses

When cash is tied up in unpaid invoices, it can be hard for a business to grow – or even operate day-to-day. That’s where invoice factoring comes in.

It’s one of the most powerful, yet underused, financial tools available to UK SMEs. And in today’s economic climate, where delayed payments are on the rise, it’s more relevant than ever.

What is Invoice Factoring?

Put simply, invoice factoring allows businesses to unlock the cash tied up in unpaid invoices – often within 24 hours.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You raise an invoice to your customer as usual.
  2. A factoring provider advances you a large percentage of the invoice value (typically 80–90%).
  3. They chase the payment from your customer on your behalf.
  4. Once paid, you receive the remaining balance, minus a small fee.

It’s not a loan – it’s your own money, just released faster.

Why Use It?

Businesses turn to invoice factoring for a range of reasons:

  • Improved cash flow – No more waiting 30, 60, or 90 days for payments.
  • Outsourced credit control – The factoring company chases the debt, saving you time.
  • Scalable funding – The more you invoice, the more funding you can access.
  • No need for personal guarantees – Unlike traditional loans, this is based on your sales ledger.

For fast-growing businesses or those with large customers on long payment terms, it can be a game-changer.

Is There a Catch?

Like any finance solution, invoice factoring isn’t for everyone. Some businesses prefer to keep credit control in-house, and others may not want customers to know a third party is involved (though confidential factoring is available too).

Costs can vary based on turnover, industry, and debtor quality – so it’s important to get the right facility in place with a trusted provider.

Could It Work for Your Business?

If your business is:

  • Waiting weeks (or months) to get paid
  • Struggling with day-to-day cash flow
  • Growing quickly and needs access to working capital
…then invoice factoring could be worth exploring.

At Clear Business Finance, we work with a panel of UK factoring providers and can help you find the most suitable and cost-effective option.
