What the Next Bank of England Rate Cut Means for Your Business

This Thursday (7th August 2025), the Bank of England is widely expected to cut its base rate again — from 4.25% to 4.00%. This would mark the fifth cut since August 2024.

So, what does this mean for UK small and medium‑sized businesses? And more importantly — what should you be doing about it?

Why is the Bank of England cutting rates?

The Bank faces a tricky balancing act:

  • Inflation is still stubbornly above target at 3.6% (vs a 2% goal).
  • Unemployment has crept up to 4.7%.
  • Economic growth remains weak, and business confidence is subdued.

Cutting rates is intended to stimulate spending and borrowing — but it comes at the risk of keeping inflation higher for longer.

What does this mean for SME borrowing?

For business owners, a lower base rate usually means:

  • Cheaper borrowing costs on variable‑rate loans, overdrafts and credit lines.
  • Opportunities to refinance existing high‑cost borrowing.
  • Improved cash flow from lower debt servicing costs.

If you’re on a fixed‑rate loan, you won’t feel the immediate benefit — but this could still be an excellent moment to explore refinancing or to review upcoming financing needs.

Should you wait or act now?

Market analysts expect at least one more rate cut before the end of 2025 — potentially bringing the base rate to 3.75% by December.

But waiting isn’t always the best move. Many lenders adjust their own rates differently from the BoE’s moves, and competitive products can be limited.

Acting early means you can:

  • Lock in lower repayment costs sooner.
  • Free up cash flow for growth or resilience planning.
  • Secure funding while lenders are still competing aggressively for SME business.

What should you do now?

Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Review your current loans: Are you paying more than you need to?
  • Re‑forecast your cashflow: Factor in the potential savings on repayments.
  • Speak to a finance expert: Explore whether refinancing or restructuring could save you money or fund growth.

Don’t miss out on the benefits of cheaper borrowing

With rates on the move again, it’s a great time to review your finance options.

Speak to a broker today and find out how we can help you reduce costs, refinance existing borrowing, or secure funding for growth.
