Funding business growth is not just about cash in the bank. Your ability to access additional finance, when you need it, often depends on your business credit score. Lenders use this score to assess risk and decide whether to approve applications for loans, overdrafts and other forms of business finance.

In this guide, we explain what a business credit score is, how it is calculated, where to check it, and how to improve it over time.

What Is a Business Credit Score?

A business credit score is a measure of your company’s creditworthiness. In simple terms, it shows how likely your business is to repay borrowed money on time.

Credit reference agencies calculate this score using information about your company’s finances, payment history and public records. Most UK business credit scores are presented on a scale, often from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating lower risk to lenders.

Your score helps banks, lenders and suppliers decide whether to offer credit, how much to lend, and on what terms.

Why Is a Good Business Credit Score Important?

A strong business credit score improves your access to:

  • Business loans and overdrafts
  • Trade credit from suppliers
  • Asset finance and leasing
  • Better interest rates and borrowing terms

A poor score can limit funding options or lead to higher costs. For growing businesses, this can restrict cash flow, slow expansion plans and reduce flexibility when unexpected costs arise.

How Is a Business Credit Score Calculated?

Credit reference agencies assess risk using a combination of financial and non-financial data. This typically includes:

  • Payment history with lenders and suppliers
  • Existing debts and credit utilisation
  • Length of trading and credit history
  • Filed accounts and company size
  • Public records such as CCJs or insolvency events
  • Industry and sector risk

Each agency uses its own scoring model, which is why scores may differ between platforms.

What Is the Difference Between Personal and Business Credit Scores?

A personal credit score reflects how you manage your own finances. A business credit score relates to how your company operates financially.

For established limited companies, the two are separate. Your personal credit score does not directly change your company’s credit score.

However, personal credit may still be considered if:

  • Your business is new or has limited trading history
  • You provide a personal guarantee
  • You apply for unsecured finance

How to Check Your Business Credit Score

Checking your business credit score is straightforward and can be done online through a credit reference agency or credit platform.

Step-by-step process

  1. Choose a credit reference agency or platform
Major UK providers include Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Other platforms such as Dun & Bradstreet and Capitalise also offer business credit insights.
  2. Provide your business details
This usually includes your registered company name, Companies House number, address and trading history.
  3. Verify your identity and role
You will need to confirm you are authorised to access the company’s credit information.
  4. Access your credit report
You can usually choose between a free basic report or a paid service with more detailed insights and monitoring tools.

Can You Check Another Company’s Business Credit Score?

Yes. Many credit platforms allow you to run reports on other businesses. This is commonly used to assess:

  • New customers before offering credit terms
  • Suppliers you rely on
  • Potential partners or contractors

Third-party credit checks can help reduce risk when entering new commercial relationships.

Free vs Paid Business Credit Score Checks

Free checks

Free reports provide a basic overview of your credit score and risk category. These are useful for quick checks but usually lack detail.

Paid checks

Paid reports or subscriptions offer deeper insights, such as:

  • Detailed payment performance
  • Credit limits and recommendations
  • Monitoring and alerts for score changes
  • Benchmarking against similar businesses

For businesses actively seeking finance, paid reports are often more useful.

Where Can You Check Your Business Credit Score?

Experian Business

Offers the My Business Profile service with credit scores, insights and monitoring. Includes a free trial, followed by a monthly subscription.

Equifax Business

Provides statutory business credit reports and paid third-party company checks.

Dun & Bradstreet

Offers both free and paid credit insight tools, including payment scores and risk indicators based on its own global data.

Capitalise

A business finance platform offering business credit scores powered by Experian, with free and paid options depending on the level of detail required.

Tips for Monitoring and Improving Your Business Credit Score

Improving your business credit score takes time, but consistent good practice makes a difference.

  • Pay suppliers and lenders on time
  • Monitor your credit report regularly for errors
  • Keep credit utilisation low and manageable
  • Maintain accurate company details and SIC codes
  • Build trade credit relationships with suppliers
  • File accounts and statutory documents on time

Strong financial discipline and clear records help lenders view your business as lower risk.
